Taman Ujung Water Palace: The Majestic Royal Sanctuary of Karangasem

Taman Ujung Water Palace, also known as Taman Soekasada, is a magnificent historical landmark located in the eastern tip of Bali. Built in 1901 by the King of Karangasem, this palace is a breathtaking combination of Balinese, European, and Chinese architecture, surrounded by vast pools and the blue horizon of the Lombok Strait.

Where this object located?

Taman Ujung is located in Seraya Village, Karangasem Regency, East Bali. It is situated about 5 kilometers southeast of Amlapura town. For those staying in South Bali (Kuta or Seminyak), it is a rewarding 2.5 to 3-hour drive. Many BaliJour guests choose to visit this site on the same day as Lempuyang Temple or Tirta Gangga due to their close proximity.

What I can do here?

Taman Ujung is a paradise for explorers and photography lovers:

  • Walk Across the Iconic Bridges: Stroll along the elegant stone bridges that connect the main palace buildings in the center of the water.
  • Climb the Pillar Ruins: Walk up the stairs to the “Pilar” ruins on the hill for a panoramic view of the entire palace complex with the blue ocean in the background.
  • Explore the King’s Bedroom: Step inside the restored royal rooms to see historical photographs and artifacts of the Karangasem Royal Family.
  • Feed the Koi Fish: Enjoy the serene atmosphere by the ponds, which are filled with vibrant Koi fish and lotus flowers.

Who are suitable to visit this place?

This destination is highly recommended for:

  • Couples & Honeymooners: It is arguably the most romantic spot in Bali, famous for professional pre-wedding photoshoots.
  • History Enthusiasts: Those who want to see a different side of Bali’s history through its unique colonial-style architecture.
  • Families: The palace grounds are massive and park-like, offering plenty of space for a relaxed stroll away from the crowds.
  • Note: While the main grounds are flat, reaching the top viewpoint requires climbing several stairs.

When is the best time to visit?

Morning (08:00 AM10:00 AM): The lighting is soft and the air is still cool. This is also when the water reflects the palace buildings like a mirror.

Dry Season: To see the contrast between the white stone pillars and the deep blue sky, visit during the dry months (April to October).

Why you will love this object?

You will love Taman Ujung because of its grand scale and peaceful elegance. Unlike the busier tourist spots, Taman Ujung feels open, airy, and royal. The blend of the “mountain” (Mount Agung) and the “sea” (Lombok Strait) as a backdrop to the palace creates a powerful energy. It’s a place where you can truly feel the “Old Bali” royalty while enjoying some of the best views the island has to offer.
